Story

'What Kind of Girl Are You?' was written in 1973. At the time I was playing with a short-lived group , we never even had a name. But we had a natural groove, and in the course of things we developed this song from the opening riff, which I just banged out at a practice session. The song pretty much wrote itself from there. That evening, I sat down and wrote the lyrics and showed them to the drummer, Paul Meek. He was surprised and said it was 'damned good'. I DO consider this to be my first good original effort. 'Kickin' Yore' came about in 1975 while I was in Germany. I plugged my guitar, a 1972 Telecaster Custom, straight into a friend's cassette deck and just played. I've always had a fondness for jazz-based progressions, and the opening section rooted this idea into my head for the rest of the tune. I didn't even have to noodle it into shape. The first run sounded 'real' and the song has stood as it is for all this time. As for the lyrics, the music suggested a pure sense of rebellion and a 'come and get me' type of attitude. Once more, the words flowed quite easily.

When Jim and I first got back together to start this album this basic track was already down. I was still learning how to get around in the DAW environment and it took us a while to get the results we wanted, but once we did it was really good. Jim's vocal phrasing was different from mine and it took some getting used to, but I could tell that it worked and I came to dig the metro. Jim also adjusted the lyrics. Originally, the final chorus went "I'll hear your advice, I'll even think about it twice, Nothing more that I got to say" etc. Here again, it took some getting used to, but it works.

It was about this time that John hooked up with us, and he was the missing link, the key that we needed to unlock a sound that fits us. He has this sound and style that is in direct contrast to mine, and to tell the truth, he's a much more technically accomplished guitarist than I am. But, in my opinion, we complement each other very well and he's a pretty easy guy to collaborate with. Overall, I think the three of us were spot on where this track is concerned.  - Stormin' Norm

Lyrics

What Kind Of Girl Are You?

First you say you love me and then you say you don't

First you say that you'll stay by my side and then you say you won't

First you say that you just  to be my little girl

Then you're off runnin' with somebody else and you're all around the world

Oh Baby well what kind of girl are you?

Oh Baby what kind of girl are you?

First you say there is no way you could ever look at anyone new

Then I get news and it's breakin' my heart well now girl you been untrue

First you say there is no way our love could ever fade

Then you're in the arms of somebody else and you think you got it made

Yeah you think you got it made

Oh Baby well what kind of girl are you?

Oh Baby well what kind of girl are you?

Well you think that I don't know about your little foolish games

But I know that you been bein' a bitch and you're callin' me all kinds of names

Someday soon you'll be at my door with a heart full of nothing to show

I'll let you in and you can sleep in my bed but girl I'll still want to know

Oh Baby well what kind of girl are you?

Oh Baby well what kind of girl are you?

Kickin' Yore

I ain't one for stickin' to tradition

And the way things have been kinda raises my suspicion

I don't have no faith in that old by-and-by

And I don't put much stock in the color of the sky

'Cause everyone knows that the sky changes hue

From black to grey to white to blue

And sure as the sky well nothing is true

When a man feels this way well what can you do?

Hey what can I do?

I have heard all those tales of old

Of the type of man bigger than Life and oh so bold

Who followed with history and continued to bleed

But listen up Jack I'm of a different breed

Now don't you tell me that I'm wrong

You know I've heard that shit just a little too long

And haven't you heard man? History's gone

And each day keeps makin' me strong

I feel so strong

I'll hear your advise

I'll even think about it twice

Nothin' more I got to say

Except I'll spend my time kickin' away

You have heard what I have to say

You can let me be or be on your way

You ain't gonna change me from the way that I am

'Cause for once in my life hey I feel like a man

I'll hear you advice 'cause I've paid the price

I'll even think it feels real nice

Nothin' more that I got to say

Except I'll spend my life kickin' yore away

Lyrics/Music - Jim Bottoms -- Music-John Meena

Story

When Jim and John first came up with this track, I was surprised. And a little dubious. It was so different from everything else we had on the plate that I wasn't  sure if it would work. But I love a challenge and it was onlyfair to do my part to bring out the best in John's music. My first distinct impression was that a steel-influenced guitar track would be a natural, and I figured I could lay that down on my Thinline Tele. Then, my 'want' bug woke up and I decided nothing would work but an actual steel guitar. So I found myself at my favorite music store ordering a Gretsch lap-steel. It arrived and I sat down to get the feel of it. Didn't have much luck with picks (you got to practice for that stuff) but I could play finger-style. Basically, thirty minutes after I hooked up I started laying down my track. Had it down in about three passes, then I went back and did the fills and final lead on the Telecaster. Listening to the playback initially I still wasn't sure, but this song grows on you. Surprisingly, this is the one song in our set that seems to have universal appeal.  - Stormin' Norm

Lyrics

Forever

If I sailed across the ocean

If I swam the deep blue sea

If I climbed the peaks at Everest would we be

Together for eternity

If I tunneled from here to China

If I crawled on my knees through broken glass

If I held up Atlas on my shoulder

Together forever will we last

And through it all the world stops turning

As we find the way Love tries

And through the ashes of burning desire

Forever love in each other's eyes

If I fought the Battle of Camlann

If I slaughtered the Mordred king

If I extinguish the fires at Babylon

Forever we're together in the golden ring

And through it all the world stops turning

As we find the way Love tries

And through the ashes of burning desire

Forever love in each other's eyes

Lyrics-Jim Bottoms/Music-Jim Bottoms, Rod Vick, Norman Morrow, John Meena

Story

Jim first brought 'Catrina' out when we were in Split Decision. He had a tape he had done with a band called American Standard. It was a straight jam, banged right off from the beginning, a lot of frenetic energy between the two guitarists. Constant riffing. We started working with it and someone had the idea of opening with the stutter-kick in the intro. The drummer, Chip Lloyd, worked up the line and we put together the intro riff to lead into the main body of the song. At that time, I was doing mostly rhythm work on the tune and our other guitarist, Jimmy Wilson, was handling the fills. The only lead work I was doing was in the interludes and another half-time riff based on the opening lines. I was using a lot of slide and just flying with it.

For this track, we all pretty much agreed to keep it simple. We did keep the kickstart, but did away with the half-time. The biggest problem was co-ordinating John's and my guitars. Originally, John had a laid-back slide lead in mind, and I wanted to keep the energy of the original recording. The result was that I was walking all over John's lines. John said the original sounded chaotic to him and suggested that I lay down my tracks first, then he would build from there. The end product was slightly Spartan compared to the original, but we held the energy with the lead trades that come across pretty well (in my opinion). Good song, fun to play. - Stormin' Norm-

Lyrics

 Catrina

By the time you read my letter

I’ll be one hundred miles away

Riding my way for the better

So now you’ll have your way

My mind has got to find peace

I’ve been so lost at home

This confusion must cease

We’re together but I’m so alone

Oh Catrina

You will always be with me

Oh Catrina

Now we’re both set free

You threatened so many times

That you would be the one

Soon you’ll see the signs

That I was the one to run

I might call to see how your doing

I might write another line

But I can’t come back to loosing Baby

I think I’ll do right fine

Oh Catrina

You will always be with me

Oh Catrina

Now we're both set free

Story

Stormin' Norm- Another old song. When I joined Split Decision, they had this song. John played keyboards and Jimmy Wilson did all the guitar work. But since John had left before I joined, and add the fact that at that time I wasn't playing keys, I opted to work up an orchestral guitar line using deep reverb and hefty delay. I thought it was a pretty good arrangement. Jim and I decided to record it, and I wanted to adhere to the original track as it was on tape. By then, I had a keyboard station and decided to use keys and one guitar. John hadn't come into The Pig yet, so this track is just Jim and myself. I think it has a good ambience as well as being a pretty good song.

Lyrics

                       EMOTIONALEE INSAYNNE

VERSE:

SWEET BLUE EYE’S CAME TO ME IN A DREAM

WISHING YOU WERE HERE WITH ME

MY LIFE IS LONELY I DON’T WANT IT THAT WAY

IM SO AFRAID YOUR BRINGING ON A NEW DAY

CHORUS:

YOU GOT ME BURNING UP

AND EMOTIONALEE INSAYNNE

YOU GOT ME BURNING UP

IN YOUR FIRE AND FLAME

VERSE:

SO UNREAL OH BUT YOUR SO ALIVE

I WANT TO TOUCH YOU BUT LOVE IS A LIE

I NEED TO HAVE YOU IN MY SOUL

SOMETHING HAS HAPPENED IM LOSING CONTROL

CHORUS:

BRIDGE:

I NEED TO HAVE YOU AND MAKE IT REAL

I CANT CONTROL THIS URGE THAT I FEEL

VERSE:

JUST LIKE A DREAM YOU WERE THERE AND THEN GONE

YOU ONLY TOUCHED ME AND TURNED ME ON

MY LIFE IS LONELY I DON’T WANT IT THAT WAY

IM SO AFRAID YOUR BRINGING ON THAT NEW DAY

Lyrics-Jim Bottoms/Music-Jim Bottoms, Rod Vick, John Meena, Norman Morrow, Steve Taylor

Story

Stormin' Norm- Once again, Jim provides a song from past efforts, this one resulting from his time with a group called Race. On my part this track came pretty easy. Power, simplicity, good hook, all the perks of a good composition. The standout moment for me was when we were listening to a playback of Jim's vocals. We were in his kitchen, which is not soundproofed. As we're listening, we hear something on the track. It's the neighbors' dog barking for all it's worth. That gave me the idea for the final vocal section, but I wasn't able to bring the bark up enough to incorporate it into the track. So, it was all about finding the right loop and cutting for proper effect. Another thing about that final section. Jim totally ad-libbed his rant. Not bad, I say! I also have to give credit to Steve Taylor for his fine bass guitar work on this track.

Lyrics

                         Physical Tongue

Verse:

Word for word

You sit and listen

Time to time

Soon you will learn your lesson

Same old worriesAlways something

Conning me out ofAnd making me sing

Chorus:

But its talk

Yes its all talking

You listen to the words Way to long

Its talk

Yes its all talking

don’t say it you may be wrong

Its all just physical tongue

Verse:

Loaded under pressure

But you carry the weight

And only long distance

 you’ll ever watch the rate

A speeding bullet

Cuts through the lines

There is no satisfaction

For you any of that time

Lyrics-Jim Bottoms/Music-Jim Bottoms, John Meena, Norman Morrow

Story

Stormin' Norm- John wrote this tune, with Jim providing the lyrics. The total ambience of John's original idea was preserved throughout the track, with some extra touches. John allows me to explore my own ideas, and the whole storm aspect stuck in my head on this one. I basically tried to lay back on the fills, then create a whirlwind effect on guitar during John's lead break. Thankfully, John was happy with the end result. This tune has a really good groove to it. I wanted to use it as the first song on the CD, but John didn't believe it was strong enough. As luck would have it, this is the leading song with our listeners. Do I know music, or what?

Lyrics

                BLEEDING HEARTS WITH BROKEN BONES

verse:

just like the rain that falls from the skies

the tears pour down out of my eyes

all i do is sit here and moan

i need you here i need you back home

chorus:

tornadoes and hailstones

bleeding hearts with broken bones

hurtfulness and lies

The storm won't stop that falls out of my eyes

verse:

love me baby like an unending rain

hold me so my love is not in vain

stop the storm and the whirlwind

don't let me go dont let this all end

Lyrics-Jim Bottoms/Music-Jim Bottoms, Mike Ross, Norman Morrow

Story

Stormin' Norm- This is the second tune featuring Jim and myself only, having been done before John joined the Pig. Jim had an old recording of him and Mike Ross performing this song, real spare, just vocals and guitar. We had done this song in Split Decision, but it had a totally different ambience to it. The one thing that always came through was the sad carnival-type feel of the music. So, we preserved that feel, utilizing acoustic guitar work and various instruments(violin, viola, cello, contrabass, calliope, bells, hand cymbals, snare, marching bass drum). I knew we had something when I listened to the track and it almost brought tears to my eyes. The overall message in this song punches through with no problem.

Lyrics

                                                                   THE RULING CLASS

Verse:

Why does the TV

scare all of the people

And churches grow tall

Look up at the steeple

Lean on another

Or are you stronger

Take on the leader

Help 'him no longer

Verse:

Alone and screaming

Come out of the air

Save all your breath

And be careful of the lair

Fire is shooting

Out of the eyes

He watches your moves

One knows

no reply

Chorus:

It’s all coming down to the wire

As big brother gets his desire

Bodies fall down from our blue sky

A collision course

we will all die

Verse:

Lights thru air

Space has lost its room

Ground is leaving

To what to whom

Know where to run

We’re all lost in this dream

We made our life

Now what does it mean

Lyrics-Jim Bottoms/Music-Jim Bottoms, Steve Taylor, John Meena, Norman Morrow

Story

Stormin' Norm- Steve Taylor wrote this song in the late 90s while we were playing in a band called Basket Case. Jim provided the lyrics and we had a pretty good fix on it. When we decided to track this one, Steve had already had to leave for personal reasons. Fortunately, I had a rough recording of his bassline, and I used that to play the bass part as accurately as possible. I wish Steve could have played it, and I was glad when he said I had pretty much nailed it. John's guitar lead in this is impeccable. His machine-gun take-off, his harmonic wind-down, and everything in-between is just classic. For myself, I just flew on the fills, trying to convey a new aspect to Jim's lyrics. I feel Jim REALLY stands out on this song, the power of his voice is all over this one.

Lyrics

                                            3rd DEGREE

Verse:

All I want to do is live my dream

Running this race ain't all it seems

What’s the point in kicking this broken down horse

Want to shoot the horse sit down on the porch

Chorus:

Try to bring me to my knees

And give me ways to plead

I’m telling you I don’t need

A fast talking tongue twisted third degree

Verse:

My life consist of working ass hard all day

No matter what I do no matter what I say

Feeling the fangs of the hungry dog

Chewing off fat to feed the hog

CHORUS:

I can take pride in what I do

I can look you in the eye and stare at you

Find me a lawyer and plead my case

Give me a jury of peers and race

Bridge:

I’m going stomp scream and shout

In my suspicion my superstitious doubt

My heart my soul my piece of mind

My whole life before me cruel and unkind

Sloppin that hog yeah he likes to eat

Slice his beacon and pickle his feet

Right up next to him with a shit eatin' grin

He still wants to be your best friend

Lyrics-Jim Bottoms/Music-Jim Bottoms, Norman Morrow, John James Lloyd, John Meena, Terry Walkingstick, Jimmy Wilson

Story

Stormin' Norm- When this number came about, I was the lead guitarist for SPLIT DECISION. That was about 1993. One day at practice I threw out the riff featured in the vocal verses, Jim glommed onto it and said we should do something with it. I remember telling him I could do that stuff all day(pretty cocky, huh?). Anyway, the group worked it up into a simple, powerful blues-rock thing. Pretty much straight-on, no frills. But every time we played it in bars it got a good reaction, so it was a natural for the album. This time around we put a different spin on it with the change-ups in chord work, timing and the addition of John's leads, plus the trades between John and myself. A really good song. And by the way, did I mention that Jim did a freakin' good turn on harmonica?!

Lyrics

                    WAXIN THE COW

VERSE:

IF YOU SEE ME

I AM WALKIN'

I'LL BE TALKIN' TO MYSELF

I CAN REMEMBER

WHEN WE WERE LOVIN'

AND YOU DIDN’T WANT TO CHANGE YOURSELF

NOW IM LOOKIN' FOR THE ANSWERS AND THEY'RE JUST NOT THERE

JUST LIKE A STORY

IN THE MOVIES

THE ENDING ALWAYS SAD BUT TRUE

BUT WE LOVED EACH OTHER

AND WE TOOK ADVANTAGE

NOW YOUR GONE TELL ME WHAT DO I DO

NOW IM LOOKIN' FOR SOME ANSWERS AND THEY'RE JUST NOT THERE

BRIDGE:

WHY I'M HERE

AIN'T EXACTLY CLEAR

IM DRINKIN' BACK THE WHISKEY

AND FIGHTIN' BACK THE TEARS

MAYBE ONE MORE TIME

JUST A LITTLE KISS

DON’T TREAT ME MEAN

DON’T DO ME LIKE THIS

VERSE:

I GUESS ITS OVER

DONE ALL THE TIME

WE’RE THROUGH WITH EACH OTHER'S LIFE

GOT TO FORGET IT

I JUST GOT TO TRY

AND MAYBE EVERYTHING WILL BE ALRIGHT

STILL LOOKIN' FOR SOME ANSWERS

AND THEY'RE JUST NOT THERE

Story

1975. When I was stationed in Germany, there was a place we called The Shrine out in the middle of the forest. It was about 2 kilometers from our kaserne, and the pathway to the place was always a pleasant walk.

Being young men, we had our ways of relaxation. The most common of these ways was the smoking of hashish, in particular, a mixture of black and green.

And there you have it. - Stormin' Norm

Lyrics

V1

Sitting by the wooded path

A circle seven head

Twilight dark and forest smells

A glowing dot of red

Balanced on an earthen beam

Holding the journey’s king

As seven sit in lighter ease

Under the black and green

And I move soft silent

V2

Stately columns threading light

Above the peaceful few

Mellow minds do search and find

A mystery anew

Spoken in a whispered hush

To keep from those unseen

Cover close in velvet thought

Under the black and green

Bridge

In fantasies we see these things

Not real but true as day

To discover that which loves and sings

And that which stands to play

In evening games we touch the soul

To feel what joy can bring

As night comes down in peaceful treble

Caressed with black and green

V3

Walking by the living stream

We slowly turn away

Full moon brings back memory

To brush away the day

Rushing on toward history

To quick forget the theme

And take us into restful sleep

Under the black and green

And I dream so easy

Lyrics

V1

Girl it’s lonely sitting in this place

Thinking about the things we used to do

If I could only see your face

And have more than just memories of you

I’m sitting by the phone

I’ve been a good man I’ve stayed alone

I can see the fading hours of the light

And I know you’ll be running ‘round tonight

Well I feel like I’m going to die

C1

Please call tomorrow

Please call tomorrow

I want to hold you and hear you sigh to me

Baby please call tomorrow

V2

I wonder where you are laid back in my chair

Dreaming feeling your touch light as Spring skies

I remember the smell of your honey-sweet hair

And the tears fall like rain from my eyes

It almost kills me to think you might be with another man

I’m hoping I’m wrong I’m wishing all I can

I need to hear your knock at my door

But I have the feeling you don’t want me no more

I’m just staring at the floor

I kind of feel like that old rug

C2

So please call tomorrow

Baby please call tomorrow

My heart is breaking I can’t help but cry

Won’t you please call tomorrow

Bridge

If I looked out my window to see you on my step

Eye kissing eye smiles touching lips

Call me down to you

As your voice soothes my soul

V3

The sun is sinking the sky is red

The stars laugh at my pain and the world stands still

My heart is clay my soul is lead

If my love won’t bring you back nothing else will

The phone is silent the darkness splits the room

I’m like a fire with nothing to consume

So sad I should put such hope on your calling

Sometimes the slightest wind can keep the sky from falling

But now that wind is beating down on me

C3

Can you please call tomorrow

Won’t you please call tomorrow

I’m so empty without you by my side

My tears are stronger than any raging tide

I know that nothing will ever be the same

By this time next week you won’t even remember my name

Please call tomorrow

Lyrics

V1

Marcy said she was a lady

And all the boys knew what she meant

All the bald pearl-tie-clip lovers

Said this girl was heaven-sent

I spent a night in her attentions

She broke all my good intent

When I woke up in an ice-cold humor

Man, let me tell you I was spent

From up to down

V2

I saw her later down at Filthy’s

Hangin’ out with all her friends

Said she could always use another

If there were possible dividends

She claimed it all to be her pleasure

And in her eyes I read the sins

We ended up walkin’ out the door together

She took me down so far I had the bends

I was tryin’ to keep up

Watchin’ Marcy go ‘round

V3

Well, Marcy split last April

Said she had to be a star

Dress in all the latest fashions

And drive the most erotic car

In the company of Adonis

With Chivas Regal in her bar

Be the next queen of the tarnished screen

Make-up could always hide the scar

Of goin’ up to down

On the Marcy-Go-Round

Verse 1

Well it’s no surprise

The way she makes me break

This feeling’s almost more

Than any man can take

Where her heart is

Who can tell?

I guess this uncertainty

Suits me well

I’m still here

Now I stand here to say

That I’ve done all I can

To make her see

That I’m the only man

To give my heart

To put her above anything else

But I see the end is coming

And I can’t save myself

Chorus 1

She’s going to walk on me

Yeah she’s going to walk on me

It doesn’t take a miracle

For a blind man to see

She’s going to walk on me

Maybe not today

Maybe not tomorrow

Verse 2

There’s another man

She says she can’t put down

He told her he loved her

But he only came around

When he felt something was lacking

In his life

Something he couldn’t get

From his lesbian wife

What the hell is that?

So she was into love

With a heart in reserve

Then I came along

And gave her more than she deserved

She found it easy to take

What I found easy to give

What came hard

Was swallowing my pride to live

Chorus 2

And she’s going to walk on me

She’s going to walk on me

It doesn’t take a miracle

For a blind man to see

She’s going to walk on me

Maybe not today

Maybe tomorrow

Bridge

Then out of nowhere

I found the understanding

That I had been waiting

So long to find

But the understanding

Quickly became confusion

And nowhere was out there

Beyond over the line

Verse 3

Well she says she loves me

But she can’t go on

She still can’t understand her part

In this love gone wrong

And looking good is the key

To how she plays her game

I free my blood

I put out the flame

But she still holds on

So now here I sit

My lessons all in place

I have finally gained

An undistorted view of my face

If she chooses to go

I’ll get over the hurt

My logic leads

Until my heart concurs

Chorus 3

Now she can walk on me

Yeah she’s going to walk on me

It doesn’t take a miracle

For a blind man to see

She’s going to walk on me

Maybe not today

Surely tomorrow
